Tortilla Flat, Apache Lake, and Fish Creek |
|
On the last full day of our vacation, Sunday, we all drove up to Fish Creek (a place between Canyon Lake and Apache Lake) for a short, fun hike. The weather was a bit iffy but we decided to chance it anyways. We had never been up to Fish Creek before so we had to search a bit to find it. We followed the road past Tortilla Flat until it turned into a dirt road. Then we went another 2 miles until we came upon an overlook - there was a "Fish Creek" sign that was posted so we parked, got out, and walked down to the end of the paved path. Although there did appear to be a hiking path that followed the summit, it was definitely not a hike for small kids. So we got back in the car and drove a little further down the dirt road.
The road after this point was very narrow and was right on a cliff. Chris was not to fond of this road :) The road took us down to the bottom of the canyon where we passed over a small bridge. I believe this was part of the Fish Creek hike but when we looked around there was still not a great place for small kids to hike down to the river bed. About 500 yards further down the road we found what we thought was the location we were looking for. We were pretty much right down at the river bed and it would have been easy to walk along it. However, right about when we got there, it started to rain pretty good.
So we decided to see if we could wait the rain out and in the mean time, we'd
drive the rest of the way to Apache Lake. Still raining when we got there,
we took a couple pictures and finally gave up for the day.

We drove back up the winding, dirt road (through a hail storm!!!) and back up to Tortilla Flat. Because it was raining, everyone and their brother was at the restaurant (the only restaurant) in Tortilla Flat. The place was packed and we had about a 30min wait. While we were waiting Cameron got a new bracelet and necklace for her upcoming birthday. And Chris got a new "Tortilla Flat" sweatshirt (only because Nic had an issue with his diapers). We sat down and had a nice lunch and then headed home.
We felt bad since the kids were in the car most of the day (but they did REALLY good) so we went to the Chandler Fashion Mall and let them play in the children's play area for a little while. Both Cameron and Nicholas loved it. While they played, Joe took Joey into the book store - which of course Joey loved. By time they came out, Joey had several more books and nice Uncle Joe had bought both Cameron and Nicholas a new book. We all sat down in the food court for some drinks (because Cameon was dying of thirst) and ice cream.
